Welcome to Larchmont Village
|
Wentworth and many personalities of Los Angeles who flee the flashy side of Beverly Hills appreciate this neighborhood, a bit bobo and much more cultural-crossed, that the Americans nickname Larchmont Village due to the name of the small boulevard, the heart of the area, that groups all stores. This is a very colorful and warm area of downtown Los Angeles. At its north end, Larchmont Village is only two blocks away from the famous Paramount studios, while at its southern end it is located in the vicinity of the beautiful and very select Hancock Park. It gives the impression that you are in a small town nestled at the center of a big city.
Delimited at the north by Melrose Avenue and the South by the Third Avenue, it is at the same time a residential area and a popular commercial zone of Los Angeles.
Larchmont Boulevard is a part of these some streets of Los Angeles from which we can admire, in the distance, the Hollywood Panel.
This boulevard consists in two distinct parts. When we arrive by the Third Avenue and pass the law wall that bear his name, we have, indeed, the feeling to get into a small village.
The houses that border it are a part of the oldest and the best preserved of the city. Some of them date from 1920. A streetcar went up and down in the 40s. Many of these houses have been used to shoot movies and advertisements and that for a very long time. They particularly served as set for the series "Keystone Cops" between 1912 and 1917. This series, silent at that time, told the story of a crazy policemen band to whom arrive the worst misfortunes.
"Abbot and Costello Meet The Three Stooges" has also been shot in Larchmont and a part of the "War games" movie in 1983 with Matthew Broderick has been shot in a house located at the corner of Lucerne and the 2nd Street. Nowadays, many houses and commercial premises are regularly used in ads and movies.
As you can see, their style is among the most various and sometimes even the most whimsical.

Until 1997, the American State Secretary Warren Christopher lived in this area. The boxer Mohamed Ali and the singer of Nat King Cole also lived there.
Between the 1st and the Third Avenue, the boulevard is residential, then, as soon as we pass this area, or about one-third of its length its aspect begins to change. It turns into commercial area where we can find small neighborhood shops, stylish restaurants and fast food. Very appreciated by celebrities, it is not rare to see them making window-shopping, eating on a terrace or simply enjoying the quiet and very friendly atmosphere that reigns in this area. Thus, Wentworth is far from being the only star of Hollywood that we can meet in these sidewalks.
Larchmont Boulevard could be similar to the Main Street of a typical small town of the United States and reserve a great deal of surprises. After a little more than one block this boulevard has some of the most various, best and most affordable restaurants of Los Angeles. It goes from the top-of-the-range of the Thai, Greek, Japanese, Italian et South American gastronomy to the smaller pizzeria, including the sandwich shops.
Here is the Starbucks where Zabou and I had the pleasure to meet Wentworth in July 2009. He has been photographed there on several occasions.
We take the opportunity to draw your attention on the beauty shop which is just next door. It is thank to this Shop, which is perhaps THE reference in that subject matter that Zabou found this area 4 years ago. A true love at first sight, before knowing that Wentworth shared her opinion.
A little bit higher on the boulevard at the corner with Beverly Boulevard, we arrive at the restaurant Koo Koo Roo that belongs to a fast-food chains specialized in chicken dishes. Wentworth, like many local residents, occasionally come by to buy a take-out meal. Zabou having tested it, she advises you to resort on the numerous restaurants in Larchmont, certainly a little bit more expensive, but much better like "Le Petit Greek" who has salads to fall backwards on the ground, or to take a pizza at the "Village pizzeria" where Went is also a customer.
Walking along Larchmont, we have more the feeling that we are in a small village of Provence with its coffee shop, its bakeries than in a big American town. Here is a bakery specialized in muffins. Before rushing yourselves there, be aware that they are huge in size and rather adapted to the rich and disproportionate food consumed by the American stomachs.
Although best known for its restaurants, this street is almost incredible because it allows us to obtain almost everything we could need. We can find, side by side, some video stores, a hardware store, a yoga school, a pharmacy, a store specialized in pets supplies, a veterinary clinic, a barbershop, a library, a news kiosk, and two travel agencies. There are also three different banks and if there is a show somewhere in the town you would like to see, you can easily get tickets to the local kiosk. At it you add a big medical center and you have all the advantages of a town in a single street.
Finally, taking back the road to West Hollywood, on Melrose, you will find Wentworth’s barbershop. A very original shop with a vintage style, that reflects his own personality.
I have been in this boulevard several times and I can tell you that it is extremely pleasant and the life should be enjoyable. It is not Zabou who would say the opposite, as she is practically a part of the area accustomed.
Here, the people take the time for living, they talk to each other as the local people do in a village. We don't really have the feeling that we are in the heart of one of the biggest megalopolis of the world. Exceptional thing in Los Angeles, when we are lucky enough to live in this neighborhood, is that we can do almost everything without having to take our car.
Is it in order to preserve this exceptional quality of life that this neighborhood is so few pointed up in the tourist guide ?
If you have the opportunity to pass through Los Angeles, take one afternoon to come here to rest and exit from the stereotypes that we usually find in this city.
All the team thanks Zabou for playing our special correspondent and for having brought all these wonderful pictures from her last trip in the country of the Pretty.
To illustrate our small presentation, here is a video realized from a movie taken in July 2009 and the Zabou’s pictures taken in October.
By arriving on this boulevard for the first time, I wanted to bring back these images for all you who do not know this place. At that time, I did not know that a few minutes later Zabou and I were going to meet Wentworth.
Thanks to Valou for this visit. Any reproduction is strictly forbidden.
